Kelly Richards, Father of Cam Richards

Cam Richards was a teenager from Garden City, SC when he stepped onto the world surfing stage. On Dec 6, 2018 at the age of 19 he had what many call the perfect ride at Hawaii’s famous Pipeline on a board designed, shaped and made by his father Kelly Richards.

Kelly Richards is a no nonsense, straight up waterman. He tells you like it is and says he is who is and if that bothers you, well, he doesn’t care. The first time I reached out he said yes but warned me that he stuttered. Kelly wasn’t sure our listeners would tolerate his speech impediment. I assured him that was not a problem.

When I started surfing at 11 yrs old in NMB, SC there were maybe 3 true surf shops along The Grand Strand. Established in 1969, The Village Surf Shop in Garden City being one, along with a surf & bike shop in Myrtle. At that time Eric Eason and his wife owned it. Anytime we surfed the south shores of the beach we had to make a stop there for wax or a new leash. I was to young and broke for a new board. LOL

When Eric was ready to retire, Kelly, his family and business partner Brian Campbell bought the shop and dove head first into being not only a first class shop but also being very active in the community and its growth.

Kelly has always supported and encouraged both his sons, Cole and Cam, to chase their surf dreams. Cam chose to dive deep into the professional surfing world. Cole is a key figure at the shop and in the water teaching new generations how to surf.

Many kids along The Grand Strand owe their passion for surfing and the surfing lifestyle to Kelly and The Village Surf Shop. Though Cam may be the face of professional surfing for the Myrtle Beach area, his dad is the man who keeps the boards in the water and local Pipeline dreams alive.

Sheri Richardson, Sister of Perry Richardson

Her brother Perry Richardson was an original member of the 90s rock band “Firehouse” and now helps Robert Sweet (ep 63) keep the beat as the bass player for “Stryper”.

Sheri and I have been friends since around 1979 or 80 (at this point who’s counting) when we started hitting the Myrtle Beach nightclub scene in our teens. We share some of those stories, but not enough to tarnish our impeccable images, what it was like growing up along The Grand Strand back then, and how life is today.

Sheri was a country girl, I was a beach bummer surfer so a teens we didn’t really cross paths. Back then that meant she lived across the waterway, while us beach folks resided between the Intercoastal Waterway and The Atlantic Ocean. Today people living 20 miles west of the ICW say they live at “the beach”.

While Perry followed his musical dreams and has toured the world, Sheri and her husband Kevin, have built an amazing life and community together in Myrtle Beach.

Sheri got her taste for restaurant work in the 80s as a waitress at Adam’s Ribs which has helped her and Kevin build a nice restaurant business in Myrtle and North Myrtle Beach.

They were kind enough to let us record 5 episodes of the podcast at one of their restaurants, Chuck’s Steak House. They also have Captain Archie’s and Oscar’s in North Myrtle Beach and The Salty Butcher in Myrtle Beach.

Sheri reflects on the hard work she and Perry had to do growing up in the country, her mother Billie’s years as Clerk of Court for Horry County, how music was a family thing, except she was only allowed to sing one song, being a grandmother and what it’s like having a Rock & Roll brother.

As my producer said, Chip, it was like listening to you just catching up with an old friend. I hope you like hanging out with Sheri and I as much as I enjoyed finally having her on the podcast.

Christopher Korman, son of Harvey Korman

OMG! It’s Harvey Korman’s Son!

I am still to this day a big fan of “Blazing Saddles” and “The Carol Burnett Show”. Mostly because of the talent and comedy timing of Harvey Korman. How fun would it be to spend 30 mins chatting with Mr. Korman about his amazing acting career? Well, how about 30 mins with his amazing son Christopher.

Christopher wrote a book called “OMG! It’s Havey Korman’s Son!” which I find hilarious because he’s right up front about who his dad is. It reminds me that before I started this podcast I shot a TV pilot called “Vanna White’s Brother’s Talk Show” – look it up on YouTube – because like Christopher and his book, we were right up front about who’s talk show it was.

Talking with Chritopher I learned he was lucky to be alive today because he was born with Hyaline membrane disease. HMD caused Christopher many health issues throughout his childhood, along with a severe learning disability. However his father was beyond supportive and encouraging. Always reminding Chrisopher to not let his disabilities define him. We discuss how his father helped him with a golf tournament and how over the years they both gave back to help kids with learning disabilities.

A loyal subscriber to Relatively Famous found out I was going to interview Chris and wanted me to ask him about “the special award his father gave him” and about the “Star Wars Holiday Special”…Both are great stories! You’ll have to listen or watch to hear them.

We also chat about Christmas’ in Lake Arrowhead, CA, what Dodger Dogs and pancakes mean to him still today and advice he has for his own son.

James Tomlinson, Son of David Tomlinson

For many people, especially in America – me included, the 1964 film Mary Poppins is the first time we really discovered who David Tomlinson was. He played Mr. Banks, the head of the family and whom a lot of Mary’s lessons were aimed at. I also remembered him from the 1966 original Herbie the Love Bug and of course the 1971 film Bedknobs and Broomsticks.

Mr. Tomlinson was a far greater actor than those three roles. He was a fantastic stage actor and VERY well known in the UK for both his stage and film work.

His son James shares fond memories of life with his father, family and Walt Disney. Walt saw his dad on stage in London, introduced himself and left, leaving Mr. Tomlinson wondering what the point was. Later he was cast as Mr. Banks and the whole Tomlinson family were able to experience Walt’s generosity. James even asked Mr. Disney about his magic plane.

We talk about who in the family followed father’s footsteps into the business, about how his Autistic brother William is gifted in woodworking way beyond what James can do.

As they say across the pond, we had just a lovely conversation. I hope you will enjoy Jame’s story as much as I did.

Guest Appearance: EZ Conversations with Furkhan Dandja

I recently had the privilege of joining EZ Conversations with Furkhan Dandja some honest conversations I’ve had about identity, addiction, recovery, and finding purpose.

We talked about what it was like growing up as the brother of Vanna White, the challenges of comparison, and how easy it can be to lose yourself when you measure your worth against someone else’s success.

Today, with more than 23 years of sobriety, I’ve learned that recovery isn’t just about putting down a substance—it’s about rebuilding your identity, finding meaning, and learning how to live authentically.

We also explored the importance of accountability, faith, daily practice, and the ongoing work of becoming the person you’re meant to be.

Whether you’ve struggled with addiction, wrestled with self-doubt, or simply found yourself questioning your path, I believe you’ll find something meaningful in this episode.

Thank you to Furkhan and the EZ Conversations team for creating space for real dialogue and deeper understanding.

Guest Appearance: Hollywood Wade | Crime & Entertainment

I recently joined Hollywood Wade for some great conversation on growing up as Vanna White’s brother to how that experience inspired me to create Relatively Famous.

We talked about what it’s really like being connected to someone in the spotlight, the opportunities and challenges that come with it, and how those experiences shaped my own journey.

Thanks to Hollywood Wade for having me on. Give it a listen and leave a comment!

Guest Appearance: Humanity 2.0 Podcast

I recently had the opportunity to join the Humanity 2.0 Podcast for a conversation that went far beyond the surface.

We sat down at Nelco Comics and talked openly about life, storytelling, addiction, recovery, purpose, family legacy, and what it means to stay connected in a world that often feels divided.

We explored how filmmaking and podcasting can bring people together, why humor and honesty matter, and how simple things—community, laughter, and yes, tacos—can help carry us through life’s toughest moments.

A huge thank you to Humanity 2.0 Podcast for having me!

Laurie Buffett McGuane, Sister of Jimmy Buffett

I feel like this was a big win for Relatively Famous. To get Jimmy Buffett’s sister Laurie to say absolutely I’d love to be a guest after so many world renowned music relatives saying no put some gas back in my tank.

In past episodes I have mentioned Laurie’s sister’s restaurant Lulu’s in North Myrtle Beach and had reached out to Lulu several times. Heck like Laurie and I talk about in our conversation I really didn’t know Jimmy had another sister. But while Googling Jimmy I found Laurie’s name and started digging around. Ok, I’m not always the brightest bulb in the pack but sometimes my light shines just enough to see something amazing. Hence, Laurie being our guest on this episode.

What an amazing woman. Let’s start strong by talking about Laurie being a pancreatic cancer survivor. She was diagnosed the same day her brother Jimmy finished his treatment for Merkel cell carcinoma. The story she tells of that day and her time battling cancer is heavy and heartwarming. This is true sibling love and support.

Laurie is a horse woman and a Montana rancher along with her famous husband, author Thomas McGuane. She is the middle sibling between Jimmy and Lulu. You’d think she was the quiet one being the middle child but she tells us that she was actually the gregarious one. Yet she always has to remind Lulu, with a smile and humor, to let people know, “Hey I’m out here too, it’s not just you and Jimmy.”

We talk about life in Jimmy’s shadow, the weight you would  think the Buffet name has in Florida but isn’t always so, about her love of horses, her husband’s books and which is her favorite. What also talk ranch life vs beach life.

Laurie knows she has an amazing life. She talks of favorite family moments and incredible experiences she has had because of her brother.

All I can really say is “even if you’re not a Parrot head you’ll LOVE our conversation about Jimmy, life, horses and family.”

We’ve included links to a couple of articles about her husband Thomas and Lulu’s restaurants, and Jimmy’s website since Laurie’s pretty laid back in the social media world.
